This granite boundary stone has an "H" inscribed on it and indicates the boundary of Holne parish. The parish boundary stones on Dartmoor date back many centuries. Today some parishes still " beat the bounds". This is a ceremony when the people of the parish walk around the boundary checking that there have been no incursions in their parish. The youth of the parish were also taught the boundary of their parish. Some parishes would bend a boy over a stone and beat them, or even more harshly, they would have their heads bumped against the boundary stone. You are very unlikely to forget the boundary after that ordeal. It is believed that "Beating the bounds" type ceremonies date back to the Bronze Age.
