Mt Sonder is located in the West MacDonnell National Park, Central Australia. According to Peter Wilkins Mount Sonder was first seen by Ernest Giles in 1872 and was named after Dr Will Otto Sonder of Hamburg, Germany, a botanist."

Mt Sonder is either the start or finish of the Larapinta Trail, a 231 km (143 mile) bushwalking (hiking) trail which runs from the Alice Springs Telegraph Station to Redbank Gorge/Mt Sonder.

The ascent of Mt Sonder, undertaken from Redbank Gorge is approximately 16 km (10 mi) return walk. The earlier parts of the climb are via clearly defined track. However, after the viewing point the track is less distinct or non existence until the "peak" is reached.

The cairn (and register) on Mt Sonder is not actually on the highest peak, but is on a peak acceptable to the local aboriginal people and does provide great views of the region.
