Cumbria is famous for its hills and lakes and many visitors come each year. Unfortunately, many go home after a wet week thinking it's famous for its rainfall! It does vary, however, depending where you are.

The central fells of the Lake District have 225 'rain days' on average, totalling around 2500 mm (100 inches) of rainfall per year. Away from the central mountains, the rainfall drops off rapidly with most of the coastal fringe having less than 1000 mm (40 inches) per year. The Eden Valley, lying in the rain shadow, normally receives about 890 mm (35 inches) per year.

There are a number of weather stations throughout Cumbria that record rainfall, temperature, wind speed and cloud cover on a daily basis. Figures over the last 100 years point towards increasing rainfall in Cumbria.

The small hamlet of Seathwaite in Borrowdale holds the distinction of being the wettest inhabited place in England with a mean annual rainfall of over 3 metres (120 inches)!

Here at Shap the rainfall is higher because of the height, but lower because of being east of the main hills. It can, however, have weather 'trapped' on one side or the other and have periods of intense rain. Shap is on the watershed between the north and south Lakes - frequently the weather changes markedly as you cross over on the M6 - Penrith often has very different weather to Kendal.

Wet Sleddale is a good name for this valley near Shap where the weather station can be found. It belongs to the Met Office and helps them produce the forecasts for the country.
