[FR] Le duc d'Aumale, membre de l'Institut de France depuis 1871, lègue Chantilly en 1884 à l'Institut sous réserve qu'à sa mort le musée Condé soit ouvert au public, que sa présentation soit préservée et que les collections ne puissent être prêtées. Le musée Condé sera ouvert au public, moins d'un an après sa mort, le 17 avril 1898.
La collection de peintures fait du château de Chantilly le second musée français de peintures anciennes (avant 1850) après le musée du Louvre.
On peut y admirer :

Poussin Le Massacre des Innocents,
Raphaël (1483-1520) : Les Trois Grâces,
Watteau (1684-1721) : Le donneur de sérénade,
Greuze (1725-1805) : Jeune fille, Jeune garçon, Le Tendre désir, La Surprise.
Ingres (1780-1867) : L'Autoportrait,
Corot (1796-1875) : Le Concert champêtre.
2 500 gravures, dont :
Dürer (1471-1528) : les célèbres Melancholia et Jérôme de Stridon dans sa cellule
2 500 dessins, dont :
Clouet (1480-1541) : Portrait de Léonore Sapata (Jean Clouet).
30 000 livres et manuscrits de la bibliothèque, dont :
Les Très Riches heures du duc de Berry (1400)

[EN] In 1884, the Duc d'Aumale, a member of the Institut de France since 1871, bequeathed Chantilly to the Institut under the condition that, on his death, the Condé Museum would be opened to the public and that the presentation of the collections would not be changed or loaned out. The Condé Museum was opened to the public one year after his death, on the 17th April 1898.
Chantilly's collection of historical paintings (before 1850) is, after the Louvre Museum, the largest in France.
It contains: over 1,000 paintings, 2,500 drawings, and 2,500 engravings. Works in the museum include those of Raphael and many other old masters.
