Four Lane Ends is the node where the main Pennine route 68 is joined by a spur to Kendal. See: (

The Kendal spur also forms part of the 151 mile Walney-to-Wear route that runs from Barrow-in-Furness to Sunderland or Whitby, which follows regional route 20. See: (

This node is in the beautiful valley of the River Lune, which squashes between the Howgill Fells and the Borrowdale Hills. The cycle route threads its way up this narrow pass intertwining with the river, the M6 motorway, and an A road. At this point it is following a small back road on the east side of the valley.
