The McPhee Campground, just 7 miles from the heart of Dolores, offers a great location for trips to Hovenweep, the Canyons of the Ancients and Mesa Verde National Park and is just three miles from the Anasazi Cultural Heritage Center. There is a first-come, first-served campground at Hovenweep, and Mcphee is the next closest for Hovenweep visits...but from here you have better access to Mesa Verde.

We stayed for two nights, wish it were more. There are 76 ($14 a night) sites in two loops in the campground. 16 sites have electric hookups ($3 extra), 4spaces have full hookups ($5 extra). Two sites have tables and toilets that accommodate wheelchairs. Only Piñon Loop sites can be reserved through the Reservation Center (all others are first-come, first-served). There is also an adjacent group camping area.

There are numerous flush toilets, so wherever your site, your not far from the "facilities." If you want a shower, they are available for $3.00 a person. Mine was OK, the water was really cold and took a long time to warm up, but...when you need a shower...

Our site was on the Juniper Loop and situated at 7,150 feet. I was amazed at the amount of stars that one could see from over a mile up in the atmosphere. There were so many stars, it looked like the sky had texture!

Like all the sites, we had a fire ring, picnic table and grill, and somewhat of a tent site, grveled and roughly leveled. We also had a piece of pipe that stuck out of the ground near our site, but I noticed it was something that was added to steer runoff rain water from entering our tent site.

It was quite, beautiful and fun! The area is full of rabbits, jackrabbits and hummingbirds. The ranger told us that a bear had been "visiting" around the time we were there, so he suggested we leave coolers inside the truck. No problemo!!!!
