This is one of three polar sundials of the same design created for the millennium by Piers Nicholson

The plinth consists of exactly 2000 bricks.

The inscription reads THIS SUNDIAL WAS PRESENTED TO THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF LONDON BY THE WORSHIPFUL COMPANY OF TYLERS AND BRICKLAYERS MASTER SIR IDRIS PEARCE CBE TD DL. TO MARK THE BEGINNING OF THE THIRD MILLENNIUM AD 2000.
