The Millennium Bridge is a pedestrian-only steel suspension bridge of innovative design over the River Thames, from Bankside on the South bank towards St Pauls on the North.

It was the first new Thames crossing to be constructed in London for over 100 years

After the bridge opened in June 2000 it suffered from lateral movement caused by pedestrians falling into step as they crossed the bridge. This led to a positive feedback, as more pedestrians fell into step with the movement of the bridge. It was closed for modifications (the fitting of mass dampers) and re-opened in February 2002

On 31st December 1999 I attended the fireworks and stood only a few tens of metres from this bridge (although at the time it was not yet open).
