Undoubtedly one of the most famous WWII quasi-fictional accounts of the war. Published in 1952, it is the story of the building of a bridge over the Kwai Yai River in western Thailand as part of a supply railroad line that will allow the Japanese army to transport supplies to their troops. The story tells how prisoners were mistreated, how they tried to saboutage the progress, and finally how Allied forces destroyed the bridge. Boulle won Prix Ste Beuve in 1952 for this work and David Lean made the story into a movie in 1957.
