This work of art, done by chainsaw sculptor, James Brazeal from Capitan NM, is very unique.
The Gillespie County Courthouse Square Beautification Committee had decided to remove a dying tree in front of the old Courthouse, when one of the members asked Brazeal if he wanted the wood for his carvings. Brazeal suggested "Why don't you let me carve a sculpture there on the grounds?" So at no cost to the County, he carved the large sculpture. This eagle sculpture represents: a shield of the east, where the sun rises; freedom to Americans; and it suggests a grandfather eagle teaching the young ones.
The tree is it not a native to the area, having been brought to Fredericksburg from somewhere else many, many decades ago. It's one of those cases of a story only leading to more stories, now if we just knew what the story of the origin of the tree was.
The story of the tree appeared in the local newspaper at the time of the carving, in the spring of 2006, but it is not online. To learn more about the "Eagle Tree', you will have to visit the site and Library, where they have copies of the article.
