During the Japanese possession of Bangkok in WWII Allied forces targeted the area heavily. At that time the zoo was transitioning from the king's garden to a public park/zoo. Since the railraod lines (a prime target for the bombers) ran not far from there and the palace was just across the street, an air raid shelter was added. After the war and the need for the shelter had passed, it was simpler to disguise the shelter somewhat rather than tear it out. Today there is a large display telling the story of WWII bombings in Bangkok. You can go inside the shelter if you like, and you can pose for a picture with the bomb!
