Hartleys was a well known feature of Ulverston and surrounding areas, with many tied pubs displaying the distinctive green paint, brand logo and selling their popular beer.
In 1982 Robinsons of Stockport, Manchester, bought the company and many people thought it would be the end for Hartleys. They continued to brew beer here for nine years, but in 1991 production was moved to Stockport, closing this brewery after 236 years. The Hartleys brand still continues and XB is still brewed and sold as Hartleys but is now brewed in Stockport.
Aficionados would say that it tastes quite different to the beer brewed in Ulverston. Many breweries have their own water supply - Brewery Street joins Fountain Street - which tends to have an effect on the final product.
The Old Brewery site is still used but only as a distribution depot. The brewery itself stands forlorn with broken windows looking out over the town.
