Dalton was the medieval capital of Furness. The monks of Furness Abbey held court and built a defensive stronghold in the town. The markets and the annual October fair held by the Cistercian monks were important events in the area.

The abbey is just outside Dalton and was serviced by the townsfolk, and also employed a lot of them. The abbey controlled vast swaths of land, and sea, and was the main economic power of the time.
The monks traded and conducted much business in Dalton and established a market in the 'square' front of the castle. In recent times this has undergone a lot of regeneration, and most of it looks quite well kept.
In the market square is this large, free standing cross. Behind is the imposing block of the castle. In front is an ornate Victorian drinking fountain. Slabs of stone were used for fish drying.
I haven't found a date for the cross - it certainly doesn't look as old as the Abbey, but certainly isn't new.
