There is a lone Historic Marker in the tiny village of Mayhill, NM, reporting an all but forgotten encounter between the US Cavalry and Mescalero Apaches during the Apache Wars.
The marker is so lonely and forgotten that it isn’t even reported on the official New Mexico Historic Markers website.
Thankfully, in 2001, Ollie Reed Jr., Reporter with the Albuquerque Tribune researched the story.
I don’t always agree with the somewhat bias language of the article but I still think this is an interesting piece of history that deserves preservation. Here is a good site to read the entire article.
