Kirkby Lonsdale is a small market town or about 2500 people. For its size it has a large number of shops, mostly small independent retailers. It is almost devoid of the usual big high street names. Lots of history, cafés and old buildings.

Kirkby Lonsdale survives on its local population, supplemented by a lot of visitors through much of the year. The area around has quite a few caravan sites and other accommodation and visitors are attracted to spend a day out in the town. It has river walks, old lanes and buildings, a very interesting church, and a famous view point.
Nearby are also a couple of private schools which adds to the air of upmarket wealth and helps put Kirkby Lonsdale on the map.
At the other extreme, Devil's Bridge is a famous rendezvous for motorbikers at weekends and bank holidays. The roads leading to Kirkby Lonsdale are viewed as good biking territory. The burger and ice cream vans at the bridge do a brisk trade most days.
As the town motto goes: "Well worth a visit".
