St Lukes Parish church Torver was rebuilt in 1849,on the site of the old fabric which tradition erroneously attributes to Archbishop Cranner.
A chapel stood on this site before the year 1538,but being a dependency of the town of Ulverston it did not posses the privilege of a burial ground,This was a source of much inconvenience to the inhabitants of Torver,for in the wet and stormy conditions it was almost impossible to traverse with a corpse the mountain roads to Ulverston,a distance of 16 miles.
