The old road crossed the River Lune on a fine arched bridged. Near by is the new bridge. Between the two is a public area with picnic benches and a good view over the river. One of the entrances has these gates, erected for the Queens coronation.

1953 saw the coronation of a new queen of England, and the first successful expedition to the summit of Everest.

Kirkby Lonsdale got a nice pair of gates to commemorate the first event. They contain E and R in cursive script, as found on some postboxes, and the date.
