Sir John was a founder member of the Royal Geographic Society, and held various government posts in the 19th century becoming the Second Secretary to the Admiralty.

It was modeled on the Eddystone Lighthouse that was built in 1759 by John Smeaton. The Monument has an internal spiral staircase of 112 narrow steps leading to the lantern chamber, which has never had a functional light.

It has become the iconic landmark of the area, and especially of Ulverston itself.
