A veggie festival with no veggies in the parade? Well, it's really about purifying the body by eating only veggies. See the link to understand this better.

jia chai in Chinese. The festival honors the Chinese heritage of the city and it is believed that the origins are in the tin mines of the early settlement. All the workers got sick and the monks cured them by having them eat only vegetables. During the festival all the restaurants in town serve only vegetarian dishes. I arrived in Phuket 2 days before the festival and was really amazed by the event. The daily morning and evening parade through town was something to see. The faithful practice a form of self-mutilation that is sometimes pretty gorey. There's also firewalking and climbing a stair of knives at the temples at night. I saw it but only briefly as it was just too much for me. Go to this link for more info: (

Coords are for just off the main traffic circle in town as that is where I took most of the pix. Festival spreads throughout the town.
