Was lucky enough to spend a week laying around Karon Beach before having to return to the real world. Karon is south of Patong Beach (which is tooooo crowded) and very family oriented. For 100 baht (less than 3USD) I got a chair and umbrella for the day. Vendors walk up and down the beach throughout the day selling ice cream, drinks, food, and of course clutterers (things to fill up your suitcase). There's parasailing and long tail boat rides and my personal favorite - seaside massage beds. Very relaxing. This spot where I spent my time is just below the statue in the traffic circle and a little down from the main entrance to the beach but there are many paths down from the street so it's easy to get to. And plenty of vendors. Be aware that going topless is allowed even though it is billed as a family beach.
