Below Unity Reservoir, Burnt River flows eastward for about two miles through a canyon cut in Eocene age volcanics. Near the eastern end of the canyon, there are a variety of balanced rocks visible above the highway. This waymark is located below one of the most obvious of these balanced rocks. Parking is limited, mostly on south side (eastbound) of the highway. At this location the canyon walls are made up of a massive Eocene age volcanic mudflow (lahar). Within the deposit are boulders (many more than 5 feet in diameter) which are surrounded by gravels and sands. As the unit erodes the boulders protect the finer materials below, resulting in a column capped by a boulder.
