When it comes to rockets and space research, people usually think Houston or Cape Canaveral. But then there is White Sands, America’s largest military installation and one of its most important rocket test areas - older than Houston and bigger than Cape Canaveral. Everything with a rocket engine, from German V2s, captured at the end of World War II, to the Space Shuttle has been roaring through the sky of New Mexico at one time or another.
So, it makes sense that Alamogordo, the town closest to White Sands, is home to a Museum of Space History, an International Space Hall of Fame and a Space Park.
We didn’t have time enough to check out the four floors of the museum, but we sure enjoyed the park. While many other space exhibitions concentrate on satellites and astronauts, this one is focused on what was tested in White Sands – rockets. Amongst many other objects, the park hosts the remains of a V2 rocket, a Little Joe rocket and a Starchaser Booster.
