A wonderful day or 2 day trip from Bangkok. Trains, buses, vans, even boats go there daily. Although the ancient city was ruined after the battles with Burma, enough remains are there to give you an idea of just how glorious the city was. I was impressed by how widespread the ruins and remaining temples and prangs are. You definitely want to at the very least rent a bicycle for the time you are touring and if you're not used to the heat I strongly urge you to hire a tuktuk. More than that, I urge you to visit if you're ever close by.
