Warton is a small, old village in north Lancashire. It was on the main route north for a long time, and was more important than the small hamlet down the road called Carnforth. With the coming of the railway to Carnforth, that town blossomed and Warton became a quiet backwater - after having exported a huge amount of limestone from Warton Crag.
In the village are two old schools, both now private homes. the infants school has an inscription saying:
"Infant School and Lecture Hall 1864"
This is on the main front wall. Below this is an entrance to the hall with the war memorial plaque on. It reads:
"This building was bought and presented to commemorate peace after the Great War.
1914-1918
For the education of the children of Warton"
E B Wren and E Barton are named at the bottom.
It's not clear why the building needed to be bought since it seems to have started life as an infant school and lecture hall. Maybe the owner needed to sell it and the village wanted to keep it as a school.
An unusual type of war memorial. Maybe they hoped the following generations would do better than they had at keeping the peace, learning from their mistakes.
In 1979 Alan and Margaret Welbank converted the building into a home, and a third inscription at the bottom records this. Today the village has a modern primary school, and the secondary in Carnforth.
