A natural spring found in the centre of Milnthorpe's market square. Once used as a source of water for the village, it has tales to tell of Evensong at the church and an elephant! The water can be seen swirling beneath the current grating.

The Fountain is a strange sight and easily missed. Large limestone shapes form a wall on one side. A stand pipe rises upwards and indeed supplies water - but a mains supply. The tap is above two gratings set in the cobbles.

Looking through the grating one can see water moving slowly, although it's not clear where it goes.

On the limestone wall is a helpful plaque - see picture. It's hard to credit this small spring with supplying the whole of Milnthorpe until 1906, especially when it wasn't a huge flow even then and needed a 'pump-stick'.

The plaque describes the misfortune of Miss Rawlinson who fell in on the way home from Evensong, plus an unfortunate elephant who slipped in. The gratings of today are part of the Millennium Improvement Scheme.
