This fire house is listed on the National Register (1982). It was built in 1906 and is in the Beaux Arts style of Architecture. The architect was Albert Turney. The cornerstone reads: Albert Turney Architect S. E. Edwards Superintendent.

From an email from Ray Elder, Kansas City Fire Museum:
Fire Station No. 2, 1020 Central Street was opened July 16, 1906. This station housed the Fire Chief, 1st Assistant Fire Chief, Steamer No. 2, Hose Wagon No. 2, Hook and Ladder No. 1, Water Tower No. 1 and Tool Wagon No.1, all horse drawn. Serve as Fire Headquarters from 1906 to 1958 then moved to the 2nd Floor of City Hall, 414 E. 12th Street. This building continued as a fire station and was closed in 1980 and the equipment placed in various downtown stations. If you would visit a fire station today, look at the equipment than drive by and look at the doors at Station No. 2 you will see the answer. ( the doors are too small)
If you are interested in the history of the department, I suggest a trip to the Missouri Valley Room on the 5th Floor of Kansas City Library, 10th and Baltimore and ask to see The Kansas City Missouri Fire Department Yearbook - 1868 to 2006, Volume No, 4.
