Hodbarrow lighthouse stands next to the sea wall at Haverig near Millom,
The seawall was built in 1900 to protect the Hodbarrow iron ore mines from the sea,and at the same time the current lighthouse was built to replace an ageing one.
The lighthouse is 30 feet tall and was fulled by paraffin all it's working life which was from1900 until 1949 when it was decommissioned,at the time the iron ore mines ceased operation ,and the mines allowed to flood which in turn allowed the RSPB to create a nature reserve here.
