Cumbria County Council has its main HQ in Carlisle, but Cumbria is quite a large county, with lots of mountains in the middle, so they have local offices around the county. This is the Kendal one. In earlier days this was the HQ of Westmorland.

In 1889, under the Local Government Act 1888, a county council was created for Westmorland. The county council was based at Kendal, instead of the historic county town of Appleby.
In 1974, under the Local Government Act 1972, the county was abolished and its former area was combined with Cumberland and parts of Lancashire and Yorkshire to form the new county of Cumbria. The former county now forms part of the districts of South Lakeland and Eden.
The grand county offices built in 1937 were retained as one of Cumbria County Council's district offices. Several of the Council's functions are housed in County Hall and full Council meetings are often held here.
Above the main entrance is a bronze replica of the old county's coat of arms - many people still regret the loss of Westmorland. On top of the building is an ornate clock, complete with railed balcony. The clock is slightly unusual in that it is square rather than round.
