The Callington Turnpike Trust set up this marked stone on the Callington to St Ive road at Newbridge to indicate the less steep, but more circuitous road to the town. Wheeled vehicles such as coaches and wagons would use this route. Horseriders and packhorses would use the shorter but steeper road through Pencreber.
The roads in the Callington area were improved in the late 18th century. An Act of Parliament dated 1785 gave the Callington Turnpike Trust authority to set up turnpike gates, erect tollhouses and appoint collectors. The moneys raised were used to improve, widen and repair the local roads.
