Alongside the River Kent in Kendal is the old fire station. It occupies what looks like a purpose built building, but has also expanded into the one next door.

Despite a bit of searching for information I've not come up with much about this building. I found one reference on the web but with no further data. Any information by visitors greatly appreciated!
About all that is known is from direct observation of the building. The openings for some sort of fire fighting vehicle are obvious and both buildings have been turned into flats, labeled the Old Fire Station.
At the back of the building is a single arched entrance. There looks like there was a plaque on the gable end but it has long gone. No other dates or inscriptions are visible.
I guess they may have used the river for a water supply. The extension into the next door building is interesting and suggests it was a fire station for a while - long enough to out grow the original 'two-appliance' station.
It's also interesting that the front openings are square, while the rear is arched. The horizontal lintels look newer than the surrounding stones, especially in the right-hand building. Perhaps originally they were just two arched doorways, but were then modernised, and extended into the third.
