St. Lawrence Church is a II* listed building dating from the 13th Century. The first vicar at St.Lawrence, Henricus was ordained in 1223. The building has seen many periods of expansion and restoration through the centuries and it remains a very active church, part of the Ecumenical parish of Stantonbury.
The first reference to a church in Bradwell comes from the early 12th century when the advowson was given to the newly founded Tickford Priory, at Newport Pagnell, by William de Bayeux and Robert de Bradwell. The earliest church consisted of the nave, chancel and south aisle.
In 1525 Tickford Priory was suppressed and its lands and possessions were granted to Cardinal Wolsey for the endowment of his college in Oxford. However by 1545 the church had been acquired by Henry VIII and has been held by the Crown ever since. This change of ownership may have provided much needed finance, and subsequently considerable restoration was carried out. The roof of the nave was heightened and the six clerestory windows added.
At this time the tower was added, using materials salvaged from Bradwell Priory, to house redundant bells from the priory church. The landmark saddleback roof, recognised by so many rail travellers as they pass on the west coast line, was added in the 19th Century.
