Marine Midland Arena opened in September of 1996 in the Cobblestone District of Buffalo, near the shores of the Buffalo River. The arena seats 18,690 and is home to the Buffalo Sabres of the NHL and Buffalo Bandits of the National Lacrosse League. A couple times a year, the four local Division I college basketball teams play here as well.
In the past, the arena has hosted the first two rounds of the NCAA basketball tournament and the finals of the NCAA Frozen Four hockey tournament.
As part of a global rebranding, Marine Midland Bank changed their name to HSBC and as a result, the arena was renamed HSBC Arena in March 1999.
