Hunstanton History
1824 A lifeboat station was established by the Norfolk Shipwreck Association. The first lifeboat was out of use by 1851.
1867 The RNLI established a lifeboat station and a boathouse was built at Old Hunstanton.
1868 The lifeboat capsized whilst on service, fortunately without loss of life.
1900 A new boathouse was built.
1921 The first motor tractor in the RNLI was delivered to Hunstanton. Before that the pulling and sailing lifeboats were launched by borrowed horses.
1931 The station closed after the number of calls reduced.
1979 With an increase in leisure boating in the area an inshore lifeboat (ILB) station was established with a D class lifeboat in June. The 1900 boathouse was reused to house the ILB.
1981 The RSPCA awarded Crew Members A Clarke, A Osborne and J Connors a certificate of merit for rescuing a dog from a speedboat that was circling at full speed. Its occupant had fallen overboard and had been taken to hospital.
1982 The D class lifeboat was withdrawn and replaced by a B class Atlantic 21 lifeboat.
1985 A Bronze Medal was awarded to Helmsman Alan Clarke for rescuing an exhausted windsurfer close to a wreck off Brancaster. The ILB grounded twice on the sandbanks in the dangerous shallows in a gale and rough sea on 31 March.
1988 A Bronze Medal was awarded to Helmsman Alan Clarke for landing an injured man from the motor fishing vessel Portunus in a strong gale, short steep seas and total darkness on 7 February.
1990 The Thanks of the Institution Inscribed on Vellum was awarded to Helmsman Alan Clarke for rescuing the sole occupant of the yacht Sanchia, which was aground on the Thornham harbour bar on 2 September 1989.
1998 A new Atlantic 75 lifeboat, B-749 DJS Haverhill, was placed on service in September.
2003 A hovercraft, H-003 Hunstanton Flyer (Civil Service no 45), was placed on service on 25 July.
2004 Lifeboat Operations Manager David Harrison was awarded an MBE by Her Majesty The Queen in the New Years Honours.
A boathouse for the hovercraft was completed in September.
