"In the mid nineteenth century Ulverston was the main commercial area on the Furness peninsula. Nationally, Freemasonry was expanding as men with high ideals and sound judgement met to form new lodges. Groups of like-minded men in the Ulverston and Furness area decided to form local lodges, the first of which was the Lodge of Furness which has a Warrant issued on 22 December 1863 and still meets in Ulverston."

The current building is made of old red sandstone, local to the area and excellent for quality carved masonry on buildings. It has a grand frontage with Georgian style elements, although it was built in 1906. A large foundation stone shows construction began in October 1905.

To celebrate the building's centenary new railings and gates were commissioned. The gates have various masonic symbols and 1906 on one side and 2006 on the other. A new extension was also built. It was completed and rededicated on 3rd October 2006. It matches the style of the rest of the building, although it does unbalance the symmetry and form of the original.
