The Westmorland Gazette has been the definitive voice of the Lake District and its surrounding communities for over 185 years. The poet Wordsworth was closely involved at the start. It's current office is in the newly developed Wainwright's Yard.

Today, the Gazette has a circulation over 30,000. It is highly regarded throughout the provincial newspaper industry and won several awards for its editorial content and overall quality. It's a weekly paper coming out on Fridays.
Now owned by the Newsquest Media Group, owned in turn by Gannett, a US company. The Gazette continues to thrive alongside free-sheets and other media. In 1998, Newsquest launched its websites, and the Gazette began life online as thisisthelakedistrict.co.uk
The Gazette now operates from a swish new office in the redeveloped Wainwrights Yard. Alfred Wainwright wrote a series of guides to the hills of the Lake District and they were published by the Westmorland Gazette. They have sold over a million copies and are still in print.
One of the unique quirks of the Gazette is a competition it runs each week. Rather than the usual 'spot-the-ball' football competition, they run a 'spot-the-dog' challenge. Instead of marking the position of the ball, put a cross where the nose of the sheepdog is! The accompanying picture shows a group of sheep being herded but with the dog removed. Where's the sheep dog and where's the nose?
The Gazette isn't generally a controversial paper, tending to be conservative in outlook - quite similar to the area it serves. It has, however, got involved in various local campaigns to save the hospital, bus services and other things of local concern. Even with all the alternative media available, the Gazette still seems to fill a much needed niche.
Newsquest Media Group have:
* 17 daily titles and almost 300 weekly newspapers
* a weekly readership of more than 13 million
* a weekly circulation of more than 10 million copies
* approximately 8,500 employees
* 11 newspaper/magazine printing sites
Perhaps the demise of newspapers is still a way off and not everything is bleak or dire. For more info about the Gazette see (
