Owned by the local council, Castle Hill is an excellent open space in the centre of town. It has various access points, some with maps. This is one and the easiest route up to the remains of the 12th century castle on the top.

Kendal Castle was built in the late 12th century. It had fallen into disrepair by the 16th century. Part of one of the towers and the keep are still standing, plus the earthworks.

This access point is at the north end of the hill and gives the longest, and therefore gentlest ascent to the top. The sign is made of wood with engraved letters and lines. They seem to be surviving the vandals so far.

The map is elegantly simple without many details to confuse the visitor. The 'You Are Here' legend stands out and orientates the diagram.

Parking can be found along the road here, without restrictions, but it is often busy during the day. Great views over the town can be had from the castle.
