The Olathe Mirror, Nov. 5, 1930 “The Rev. C. J. Garrett, evangelist, opened a revival meeting Wednesday evening, this week, at the old United Presbyterian church, corner of Loula and Water…”. Nov. 13, 1930 “Revival is underway”, Nov. 20, 1930 “Revival meetings to continue all next week.” Every week a new article in the paper reported sermon topics for upcoming nights, with such notable titles as “The Value of a Soul”, “A Trip through Hell” and“ Is Olathe Hell?” The Mirror noted that “Mr. Garrett’s sermons are proving most interesting”and“Olatheans will want to hear Mr. Garrett’s discourse on such a 'hot' topic.”
December 18, 1930, the paper reported - “revival meetings close with church organized.” Under the leadership of C. J. Garrett and District Superintendent, Rev. N. B. Herrell the Olathe Church of the Nazarene was“perfected” with 20 charter members. The church was
officially recognized in September of 1931 with its first report to the district assembly.
That small band of believers had been meeting informally for Bible study in a private home. Seeking to know God better, they invited evangelist, C. J. Garrett to hold revival meetings. Rev. Garrett stretched his own faith by following the leading of the Holy Spirit,
moving his family from Ottawa to Olathe to shepherd this new congregation. During the next thirty years the church was under the leadership of 14 different pastors. It met in four different locations including the second floor of a creamery, the vacated Presbyterian Church at Loula and Water, and a former munitions depot whose most prominent feature was its “swayback roof”. In 1954, construction began on the new structure at Lee and Wabash with Mr. Arthur Uphaus acting as chairman of the building committee. Arthur
and his wife Mattie would continue to be primary laymen, sacrificial givers, and supporters in all aspects of the church’s life.
“To Know God, To Grow in Faith, To Show God’s Love”. The mission statement may have taken seven decades to be verbalized, but the underlying purpose has always been there.
