The parish of Stainton, 4 miles SE of Kendal, decided to mark the Millennium with a cross at the junction with the main road. It is a well carved wooden cross of a Celtic design. It has 'Stainton' carved across the middle.

The cross is easily seen as you drive along the A65 between Kendal and Crooklands. It stands on the corner of the lane which leads down to the village.
The cross is a circular Celtic design with the horizontal bar running across the middle with the village name on. Depending on which side you look at, depends on how it is spelled.
The base has the names of five mills that existed beside the beck. Other panels have intricate carving of vines on them. The cross was carved by a local man, John Marshall, from an oak tree felled in a storm.
A small plaque on the side of the cross records these details and that it was erected on 15th December 1999 to mark the Millennium.
