Built in 1726 and substantially restored in 1858 the church is a simple rectangular building with Westmorland slate roof and a bell-cote on the western end. Its full title is the Parish Church of St John, Helsington.
It sits on the edge of a limestone escarpment with magnificent views over the Lyth Valley and the Lake District hills. To the south is Morecambe Bay and Arnside Knott. Around it is open National Trust land. The views are extensive and several walks can be started from the church.
It has a small graveyard, which is often full of flowers - snow drops and daffodils can carpet much of the space at the right time of year. the church is open most days 10am-4pm.
Service times vary as it is a very small church. It is part of the Lyth Valley Team of Churches (an informal Grouping of 8 local Anglican Churches). Times are displayed in the porch, or call the Vicar (see (
visit link) for details).
The church has an excellent stained glass window on the east wall above the alter. Around it is a painted mural by Marian Daumaret (1921), which is inspired by the magnificent view over the Kent estuary from the church.
