Liestal liegt an der internationalen Bahnlinie Köln – Basel – Chiasso – Mailand. Intercitys und Schnellzüge verbinden in kurzen Intervallen Liestal mit den wichtigsten Schweizer Städten sowie mit Mailand. Ebenfalls hält die S-Bahn. Liestal ist auch seit 1880 Ausgangspunkt der Waldenburgerbahn.
Regionalbusse der Autobus AG Liestal (AAGL) erschliessen Liestals Agglomeration sowie das Tal nach Reigoldswil wie auch der Ergolz und dem Rhein entlang die Orte bis nach Basel. Postautos (Postbusse) verbinden das hügelige Hinterland mit Liestal.
