If you're not easily accessible, the normal ambulance service can't get to you. Usually this means people stuck on mountains or having fallen off them. There are several mountain rescue teams in the Lake District, each with their own base.

Kendal Mountain Rescue Team are based in a purpose built building in Busher Walk opposite the police, fire and ambulance stations - it's a safe place to be! The current building was completed in 1999 but they have been here since 1980. The first Kendal team was formed in 1953.

Currently they average 40 call-outs a year. They have two first response Land Rovers and a Renault Traffic personnel carrier. All three vehicles are capable of acting as an ambulance.

Medical equipment and training has improved over recent years, and includes the recent introduction of vacuum splints and mattress, and a portable defibrillator.

"From Windermere in the west to Cautley Spout in the east, from the summit of High Street to the shores of Morecambe Bay. Call-outs can include cragwork, search & rescue, recovery and supporting other services in bad weather, involving visitors and local residents. Many of the team are now also trained in swift-water rescue techniques."

Pretty good for a volunteer service supported by public donations.
