Cumbria is a rural county with the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks covering parts of it. It also has concentrations of population in towns, some with real economic disadvantages. the size and diversity of the county provide the police with a wide range of challenges. Generally, however, it is a pretty safe place to live. Here's some info from the police website:
"Latest statistics show Cumbria is the safest place to live in England and Wales.
According to Home Office figures Cumbria had the fewest homicides in the country, with none in financial year 2006/07 and 16 over the last five years.
Chief Constable of Cumbria Constabulary, Mr Craig Mackey, said: “These figures highlight that Cumbria really is the safest place in the Country to live, work and visit. It should be reassuring to the people of Cumbria that they enjoy living in a safe county and the aim of the Constabulary is to keep it that way. Our dedicated neighbourhood policing teams work closely with local communities to fight crime and build Respect in the area.”
