The Buffalo/Niagara region was a critical location during the War of 1812. Several battles were fought, both stateside and across the Niagara River in Canada, but none were fought in the vicinity of the cemetery. This area along Ellicott Creek was used, however, as an Army barracks. After the war had started, these barracks were turned into hospitals to care for the wounded and sick. Some of those cared for were British soldiers whom the Americans had captured.

The soldiers buried in this cemetery are those who died while in the nearby hospitals. Two mass burial gravesites, one on each side of the cemetery, are only marked by several white crosses with American and British flags. Conflicting reports state the number of Americans buried here between 200 and 325. An unknown number of British are buried here, as no records were kept of who was captured during the war.
Date cemetery was established: 1814
