In 1974 - Spokane, Washington put on a world's fair that was unique in a couple ways: it was the only U.S. fair of the Bicentennial era and no smaller city had ever hosted a world's fair. During the six months it was open, over five million people (roughly 28 times the city's population) visited the Expo.

The theme of Expo '74 was "Celebrating a Fresh, New Environment". Spokane did just that.
It demolished part of a downtown Great Northern rail depot and ended up with first-rate park, the 100 acre (400,000 m²) Riverfront Park.
The old depot clock tower still stands today as well as many of the structures built for the Fair. The United States Pavilion now houses an IMAX theater and the Washington State Pavilion became the downtown Opera House and exhibition hall.
The era of Expo '74 brought new life to Spokane and it presented a showcase for all the world to see.
