Just a small side entrance to Aldingham Hall, allowing access to the beach. A fine arch in which to mount the gate, which has some quality wrought iron work.

Aldingham is a small village on the side of Morecambe Bay between Ulverston and Barrow. the two largest buildings are the 12th century church and opposite, Aldingham Hall.
"The magnificent building was begun in 1846 by Dr. John Stonard , then rector of the parish, and took four years to build. Stonard never saw it finished, however, as he died in 1849 and left it to his man servant, Edward Jones Schollick who had reportedly saved his master's life on the sands of Morecambe Bay. Schollick was an interesting character who became a local philanthropist with interests in shipbuilding and iron ore mining. He was unpopular, however, and emigrated to Australia in 1876. It has since been a convalescence home and is now a home for the elderly." Wikipedia.
A short walk across the lawn would bring Schollick to this side gate. Directly across a small track is the edge of the bay. The gate is in a large stone arch, which has I.S 1846 inscribed on the key stone. The gate itself is well made with some leaf detail and basket work in the wrought iron.
It looks to be a much newer gate than 1846, from the state of the paint and metal. It has probably replaced an earlier one since the arch looks original.
