This just meets the height requirement and is an unusual obelisk. From behind it looks 'normal' but come round the front and there is a large opening, which once housed a drinking fountain.
The plumbing is still visible but it is no longer in service. Most drinking fountains in this country have dried up over the years due to health and hygiene concerns.
The carving on the sandstone is high quality and no doubt the good folk of Kendal, promenading in the park, would have been pleased to stop here for refreshment.
Abbott Hall Park is in the southern centre of town and runs down from the main street to the river. Abbott Hall Art Gallery is nearby.
There is a dearth of information about this obelisk, so any visitors who can find out more would be very welcome.
