The Tewitfield lock system are a flight of 8 locks which raised the lancaster canal by 76 feet in a distance three quarters of a mile.
The canal which was built 200 years ago is mainly used by pleasure crafts these days, and the Tewitfield section is currently unnavigable, but hopes are high that once again this stretch will be reopened, the locks and masonry are in good condition and could be restored.
