Designed by the Vis Williams partnership, the large retail stores on the edge of Kendal include twin pyramids. Compared with many of the usual retail 'sheds' these buildings with their pyramids and arched entrances have a certain style.

In the late '90s permission was given to build two large retail stores on land to the SE of Kendal. With the new hospital also going up, this was a big expansion on this side of town. Asda was also the first 'out-of-town' supermarket in the area.

Perhaps these factors led to a desire to produce a well designed building to help avoid controversy. The result are buildings with twin pyramids rising from the roofs, which house office space, and large arched entrances in local stone. The quality of materials and design is quite different to today's tendency of putting up large 'sheds'.

These pyramids are certainly not in the same league as the Egyptian ones, but if you need some shopping, there are worse places to visit!
