Built during the reign of King Rama I (1782-1809) this octagonal shaped fort was originally built as a moat defense. It was a part of the new Siamese capital's defense plan for the city of Bangkok. During the Burmese siege of 1785 the forts played an important part in repelling the attacking armies. In 1949 the fort was placed on the Register of National Ancient Places. Sadly, today the fort is best known in Bangkok as the site of an ongoing battle between the government and residents of the neighborhood surrounding the fort. The fort itself has fallen into disrepair but the residents of the neighborhood have obtained permission to make repairs and are at work on those repairs now.
