Lots of backpackers pass through this station on their way to another part of Thailand (probably Chiang Mai in the north or Koh Samui in the south). You will also see a lot of expats who live in Thailand boarding the train to Nong Khai at the Laotion border to go across and make an overnight embassy visit for visa renewals. But mostly you will see all the local Thai people living their everyday lives which includes taking the train all across Thailand. Aside from the bus, this is the most expedient form of affordable transportation in the country. Sleeping cars have porters to make up your bed and to bring food and drink from the dining car. If you make it to Thailand do plan at least a short trip on the train just for the experience. But if you can't do that, be sure to visit the station and soak in the atmosphere.
